"In thinking about how wonderful, fearful, &
awesome God is, I thought of this verse: "It's a terrifying
thing to fall into the hands of the living God." (Hewbrews
10:31) & "Our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12:29. I
have never caught a Pipeline wave - heck I can't even
skimboard - but imagine that it is a lot like our
relationship with God - exciting, terrifying, dangerous . .
. all at the same time. At some point you make the choice to
be brave & courageous enough to get on & ride - And in
riding it there has to be some sense of peace that you are
totally in His hands too - & a relief that you finally
surrendered to self enough to let go of all that hindered
you. (Pastor Neil Awbrey)

Ryan's Inshore
FISHING REPORT: |
 |
***Oil Spill Notice: All areas around
Panama City are open for fishing out to 9 miles.
Federal Waters have been closed
The marine life in our area has been Boiling over this last
coupe of weeks. Dawn patrol Paddleboarders are
reporting acres of bait fish and plenty of big shadows
feeding on them. It seems a lot of marine life has
been pushed back into our area escaping the oil to the west.
Caution: Rays are running the shore line in large
numbers so watch your feet!
The water temp is in the low to high 70's in which has
opened up the flood gates for
Kings, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Blue runners, Cobia, Pompano,
Tarpon, Jacks, shark, and many other species to come into our area.
Spanish are being reported in large hungry numbers all down
the gulf piers, jetties, bay piers and marina, St Andrews State Park,
and along the coast. Cobia are also being spotted more
recently. They are possibly escaping oil to the west. King Mackerel has shown up and in good numbers
and are being caught daily. Get up
early for Kings as their favorite time to bite is right at
sun rise. Pompano are running along
the beaches in high numbers. Sand fleas and Pompano
Jigs are catching these guys.
Tactics: Pompano are biting beach side from near
shore to the drop of the first sandbar. If you are
heading to the beach the bait to use are sand fleas.
Either purchase them or grab sand flea rake and shuffle
some sand to catch them yourself. They burrow down in
the sand an inch or so at the shore line in the wave
break. When you hook the little guys as bait remember
they will want to burrow back down in the sand to hide
so you will need a pompano rig with little floats or
something similar to keep them close to the bottom but
not able to dig back in the sand. If fishing for them
from a pier a light tackle, pompano jig, and a good eye
is preferred. Jigs come in all colors, Pink or white are
good colors to start with.
King Mackerel: Early morning and late evenings are
the best time to catch King Mackerel. The bait
most are being caught on are live or dead cigar minnows
or other baitfish. I suggest using a bite
wire leader as Kings chew through mono.
Although live bait fish is best it is not uncommon to
catch a King on lures, gotchas, bubble rigs, and flies.
I also suggest using a reel with a great drag system as
these fish will make a few good solid runs before giving
up.
Redfish:
All year long along the coast or in the bays this area
is teaming with redfish. These fish will eat just
about anything. On the coast I would like to tell you
a specific bait or lure to use but they will bite just about
anything from live bait, cut bait, shrimp, squid, and even
an occasional one will hit a bubble rig or gotcha plug.
In the back bay areas try a gold spoon or live shrimp.
The reds running the coast and are mostly oversized with the
occasional slot fish. Be sure to know your limits and
sizes on all fish.
Cobia:
For Cobia your best bet you will need a cobia jig or a
live eel, a good pair of polarized eyeglasses, a good
eye, and a lot of patience. Most cobia fisherman find
tipping the hook of the cobia jig with a squid increases
chances of a hook up. From the piers or jetties face
east in the Spring time and look for schools of rays or
sea turtles as the Cobia run usually swim underneath
them. From a boat look for the same but being able to
covering more ground is very helpful.
Spanish, Bluefish, and Ladyfish:
Although there are many methods to fishing for Spanish,
Bluefish, and Ladyfish currently a fast retrieved size 0
clarkspoon or squid spoon weighted with a 2oz weight
seems to be catching the most. A close second is a green
head/white body or yellow head/chrome body gotcha. The bubble rig with a straw and/or
other various lures will become the tackle of choice
when water temps reach 75-80s.
Bonita:
A tactic I have found useful for catching bonita from a
pier/jetties is using a bubble rig trailing a clarksoon
with the red bead removed. Using a medium to fast
retrieve without popping the bubble. The main
trick is finding a school of them.
Shark:
If you want to catch a shark right now you will need
some strong wire leader, cut bait, big rod and reel, and
some patience. Various setups are available but I
suggest making your own. For casting from pier or beach
I actually find using picture framing hanging wire best
(cheap, strong, easy to store, tangle free, big sharks
down mind it) rigged with the biggest circle hook you
can get your hands on. Use larger weights if the
current is strong. The bigger hook the better.
There are some big sharks out there so you want to use
as long a leader as you can physically cast with your
setup. Every shark fisherman will tell you if your line
touches the shark your line will snap and you lost the
fish. You will need a big beefy rod and reel with high
pound test line...power pro works great. Various cut
baits work. Bonita, Ladyfish, and hard tails are among
these. Fish at night and have some patience!
